Project manager jobs: decide whether PMP is relevant before buying a course.

Compare the vacancy’s certification wording with the delivery evidence you can already demonstrate.

Read required and preferred as different instructions.

Some project-manager advertisements require a named credential; others prefer one or focus on delivery experience. Copy the employer’s exact wording into your notes. A certification does not replace evidence of managing a schedule, coordinating people or handling a change in scope. Equally, an employer’s essential credential should not be silently treated as optional. Ask for clarification when the requirement and the application form disagree.

Check eligibility with PMI rather than a course advertisement.

PMI’s official PMP page sets out eligibility routes based on education, project experience and training. Check the current route and application instructions directly; do not assume that attending a training course makes you eligible for the certification. Record your actual experience and ask PMI about an unclear case. This guide does not sell a course, assess your eligibility or suggest listing PMP after your name before it is awarded. A different credential or a coordinator role may fit a different stage of your career.

Use a delivery example with a visible decision.

Prepare a genuine project you can discuss. State the intended output, your responsibility, the constraints and a decision you made when something changed. In a fictional office move, a supplier delay might require revising the sequence of tasks and confirming a revised handover. Explain who approved the change and what you communicated. Avoid taking credit for the sponsor’s decision or using a project budget you are not permitted to disclose. A modest project with clear responsibility is better evidence than a grand title without detail.

Bring one artifact you can safely explain.

A redacted or synthetic milestone plan, risk log or status summary can make your method concrete. Mark synthetic material as a practice example. Explain what each field is for, how often it would be updated and which decision it supports. Do not share an employer’s internal project file merely because you created it. If asked for an assessment, confirm the time limit and permitted tools. Show assumptions and unresolved dependencies rather than claiming every risk has been eliminated.

Compare the role’s authority and working conditions.

Ask what you would own, which decisions need approval and how success is assessed. Clarify whether the job is project coordination, delivery management, program support or a specialist role using the same title. Check location, required attendance, contract duration and any travel. Pay comparisons need the same currency, period and seniority; a qualification alone does not establish a salary entitlement. Use the employer’s written offer and current job details to make your decision.
