Remote doesn’t always mean anywhere.
A practical guide to location restrictions, time zones and work authorisation.
Read the location before the title.
A remote role describes where you work relative to an office. It does not automatically say which countries the company can hire in. Employers may restrict a role because of payroll arrangements, local employment obligations, client contracts or working hours. Before writing an application, look for a specific list of eligible countries and any required time-zone overlap. If a posting only says “remote”, treat eligibility as a question to confirm.
Separate three different questions.
Ask where you may live, which hours you must work and what type of contract is offered. These questions have different answers. A company may accept applicants in several countries but expect a few hours of overlap with its main team. Another may advertise a contractor engagement rather than employment. Do not assume that a contractor role includes the benefits, tax arrangements or protections of an employee position.
Use a short eligibility note.
When a role appears suitable, make your location and working availability easy to understand. For example: “I am based in Karachi and can overlap with your stated afternoon working hours.” State only what you can actually sustain. Do not change your location to bypass a restriction. If the advertisement is unclear, ask the recruiter whether candidates based in your country can be considered before investing in a long assessment.
Check again before accepting.
Before accepting an offer, confirm the employing or contracting entity, payment currency, expected schedule, equipment arrangements and written terms. Cross-border tax, immigration and employment questions depend on the countries and circumstances involved; obtain qualified local advice where needed. Country filters are a way to narrow a search, not a guarantee of eligibility.
